The Scope of the conference

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT by CONFERENCE ORGANIZERS:

Dear Colleagues,

Due to the covid-19 pandemic, this year we were obliged to shift our conference ”From Solid State to BioPhysics X: From Basic to Life Sciences’’, to June 5-12, 2021. Closely following the situation, with the promises of tested vaccines, we truly hope, that we can maintain this date. More than ever we all need the friendly Mediterranean ambience of the conference! Hence, for organizational reasons, we would highly appreciate if you could kindly confirm your participation.

NOTE: If worse comes to worst, and travelling is still hindered in spring, we may prefer to postpone the whole event for one more year (i.e. to June 4-11. 2022.), rather than to zoom it. The final decision will be taken in the first week of April and announced here at our web page: http://dubrovnik.epfl.ch/

Looking forward to hearing from you, many thanks,

  • Aleksandra Rađenović (Switzerland) nano-bio chair,
  • Neven Barišić (Austria & Croatia) solid state chair,
  • Slaven Garaj, (Singapore) nanoscience chair,
  • Igor Štagljar (Canada) bio-med chair,
  • László Forró & Davor Pavuna, EPFL, co-chairs

The scope of the conference:

Our conference provides a forum for all those who have experienced the exciting passage from solid state to biophysics and biomedicine, and/or are keenly aware of the underlying unity of basic and life sciences. The conference topics are open ended and we invite colleagues from biology who are seeking a better contact with physicists and all scientists who want to have a fresh outlook on emerging bio- themes. Especially we feel a close relation with specialists in nanoscience, both in physics and chemistry, whose expertise is at the length-scale of biological structures. New techniques, new approaches to living matter and genomics/proteomics/drug discovery are also the subject of the conference. And, we emphasize that this is not a conference in a ”closed”, specialized field, rather, this is a meeting of interdisciplinary visions and communications, of friendly collegial dialogues. We therefore guarantee a captive audience and an interactive and thought-provoking environment.

In recent years, we had some special symposia, and in 2018 we also have a special mini-workshop on Nano pores (Wednesday through Friday) and mid-week we discuss recent bio-medical progress! We have invited world-class scientists who are developing and applying state-of-the-art biophysical and molecular biological approaches to gain functional understanding of human diseases. We all share a captive audience and an highly interactive and thought-provoking environment. The spirit of the conference is perhaps best illustrated by the life-work of late Pierre-Gilles de Gennes, covering superconductivity, polymers, wetting, memory and many other fascinating topics. He was an active adviser, speaker and participant in 2006. With a cordial support of his family, in his memory we have established the prize that carries his name and that is awarded to outstanding young scientists in biophysics.

From the medieval times to the present era, Dubrovnik Riviera has hosted many conferences, symposia, meetings … ranging from philosophy and arts to physics and medicine. Scientists and artists have always enjoyed very creative atmosphere in this unique place at the Mediterranean sea. Indeed, this was also the experience of all the participants in our conferences since 2002, so, welcome to Dubrovnik 2020!
